We recently wrote about knowing your labels, what being certified means, etc.   If you are one who prefers to have the info ‘read’ to you rather than sifting through the various information available, here is a video that summarises the information really nicely.

The people at The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics just released a new video called The Story of Cosmetics 2010. It shows how companies get to put all those nasties in conventional baby care products (and other cosmetics). By choosing certified organic products you are creating a greener safer enviroment and economy. Not to mention keeping the nasties out of our little ones.

For Big People! by jessicatbuds

By big, we don’t mean HUGE.  We mean adults.  Us who spend so much time pampering the little ones and don’t spend that much time on ourselves.  Well, all those statistics about toxins and absorption into the bloodstream applies to adults too.

Buds has a big sister brand – Esmeria.  Based on the same principles of using effective bioactives yet ensuring no harmful chemicals, Esmeria has been rather ‘elusive’ as one fan puts it.  We were therefore excited to see some lovely reviews on two particular products.  Check out My Women Stuff’s review on the Intensive Body Cream.  From our previous post about First Aid Lotion being a ‘miracle ointment’, now this lovely Intensive Body Cream has been described as being similar to Holy Grail.  Also check out the review of Esmeria Hair Shampoo by Pretty Beautiful.

We have some pretty exciting news coming up about Esmeria for later this year, so keep your eyes and ears open!  We’ll announce it here too, as we think it’s important us big people also carefully select products for ourselves to ensure effective and safe skincare products are used!

What Does the Label Really Mean? by jessicatbuds

No, we’re not talking about the big expensive brands.  We’re talking about going back to basic – do you know what your label says and more importantly, are they telling the truth?  In all the hype surrounding safe/ natural/ organic products, here are some claims you may commonly see on labels of skincare products:

“No SLS”

“Contains organic ingredients”

“All natural”

“Tear-free formulation”

Do you know what they mean?  Contains no SLS?  Very good.  But look at the ingredients list a lot closely and you realise it contains SLES!  So, yes, they are right that there is no SLS but SLES is just as harmful!

“All Natural”?  “Contains organic ingredients”?  Is this the same as certified organic product?  No.  Contains organic ingredient means just that.  Some, may be 2 out of 10, of the ingredients used are certified organic.  What of the remaining ingredients? Some of the ingredients may be harmful.  Or they may miss out the harmful ingredients on the list.  If a product is truly organic, they would not need to use claims such as “Contains organic ingredients”, they would show their genuine intent and go ahead to be certified by one of the reputable organic certifying bodies such as ACO, Ecocert, USDA etc.

“Tear Free Formulation”?  Sure.  What do they use to numb the eyes so that it does not tear?  Are those safe?

Try this for a simple intro specifically on baby care: http://ittybittygreenie.com.au/blog/88/whats-going-on/ We will soon put a list of ingredients we believe to be harmful on the Buds website.

In the meantime, don’t be afraid to ask questions.  You need to be sure that what you use is safe.  If you have any questions, please ask us here, via email (enquiry@budsbaby.com) or on the Buds Baby Facebook page.

Mums: Pamper Yourselves! by jessicatbuds

In the selfless nature inherent in all mothers, mothers would willingly spend spend spend on their babies and make sure that their babies get the best, sometimes even at their own expense.  We have seen many mothers and even mothers-to-be scrutinising products for their babies but for their own, they would grab whatever is easiest and cheapest.  Please take care of yourself, Mummies!  Your babies do rely on you to stay healthy and well!  Take time to pamper yourselves – it does not have to be a long session away as we know how stretched for time you are. Start with the basics – eat good healthy food and have a good skincare regime.  After all, what you apply on your skin is absorbed into your bloodstream so contrary to many people’s beliefs, it is important to ensure you use only safe skincare products for yourself.  Have a look at Natural Beauty Products for Mother & Baby.

We have not forgotten mums in our products – Buds Cherished Organics has included 2 products for mothers in the world’s largest preservative-free and certified organic skincare line for babies and mums.  Check out our Beautiful Blooming Belly Stretch Mark Cream and Nursing Salve.

Blossom beautifully with our Beautiful Blooming Belly Stretch Mark Cream which is packed with luxurious and moisturising Jojoba, Shea Butter and Sunflower Oil which transport a medley of bio actives to your skin.  Chlorella Vulgaris Extract and Tamanol Oil promotes production of collagen and elastin in your body.  See some feedback from UK here:  http://sanjidaoconnel.livejournal.com/14324.html.  Closer to home, one of our customers found this rich cream so moisturising that she has started applying it on her whole  body as she loved how soft the cream left her skin and her daughter loved the scent too.  Speaking of which, this cream is not just for pregnant mothers; neither is it just for the growing belly.  We have personally received feedback from another 2 customers who have never been pregnant (yet).  One had stretch marks due to dieting and another had stretch marks on her thighs, possibly due to hormones or tight jeans.  Both reported success stories with this lovely cream, so get applying and feedback to us!

Breastfeeding is another practice that we at Buds strongly advocate.  However, we know that it can sometimes be painful especially to first-time mums.  The Nursing Salve helps you to cope with the demands of nursing a newborn.  This cross between a balm and gel features Inca Inchi and Aroleat Lavanda to moisturise your nipple area and prepare it for breastfeeding whilst at the same time healing any dry, cracked nipples.  What’s more, since it’s preservative-free and certified organic by Ecocert, you can feel a lot more assured that it is safe for the baby to ingest.  But enough from us – here is some feedback from our customers:

Breastfeeding Advocates Network’s Must Buy discussion: From coleen – i’d seriously reccommend nursing salve, like the Buds nursing salve. coz seriously, the first 14 days of breastfeeding is the worst! and without the salve i think i’d quit in 5 days.. as soon as the milk came in and my nipples cracked, i was going to quit but the nursing salve kept it soothed, moisturised and best of all, its organic and safe for baby to ingest, so no need to wipe before nursing. it really was my secret to success the first few days. besides that i think a good breast pump is essential, though i personally don’t use it much.

“Miracle Ointment”? by jessicatbuds

WOW – we have one very happy customer who described the Buds Soothing Organics First Aid Lotion as a miracle ointment.  We can’t get better feedback than this!  What is especially great is that Dot Dot took photos of the recovery of the inflammation every few hours to show the change.  Click this link for the entry.

Many people wonder about the purpose of our First Aid Lotion.  This “miracle ointment” (we are so going to use it often now! 🙂 ) is to be used on scratches, wounds and bites.  The Organic Tea Tree oil serves as an anti-bacterial defence mechanism and helps to soothe the inflammation.  This lotion also contains prebiotic Gluco-oglicosaccharide which selectively boosts the friendly and healthy bacteria on the skin whilst inhibiting the growth of those nasty unfriendly bacteria.  At 50ml, it is a handy size to fit into any baby bag and First Aid kits and whip it out to soothe the ouchies when your little one has a scrape at the playground or is bitten by the mosquitoes at school!

Bite Test Review? by jessicatbuds

Here is a lovely review from Baby Center: http://community.babycenter.com/journal/chinjenny/3124699/product_review_-_buds_organics It was great that Ben’s Mummy wrote her ‘diary’ of reviews over several days so she could see the difference with the products.  Oh and we personally love the bite test!  🙂

Another mother also highlighted the importance of reading the labels and knowing what ingredients are safe for your babies (and yourself!), and what ingredients are harmful: http://leonalim.com/blog/index.php/2009/10/19/go-organic/#comment-62949 We will be updating the Buds website soon with details on harmful ingredient so you can check those against the brands you currently use and ensure you are comfortable with them.  Scratching your head over a particular ingredient in our product or maybe eve in other brand’s product?  Feel free to bounce the question off us at enquiry@budsbaby.com and we’ll help look it up for you!
